Young Natural Hair Gurus Making a Change

Everyday young men and women with natural hair are becoming a part of the natural hair community as self-taught gurus. The popularity of the natural hair community is inspiring young people to learn more about their hair and what makes it grow. These young gurus can be found on every social media platform, from Twitter to YouTube. Shaunice White is a twenty-one year old natural hair guru who started her natural hair journey only 4 years ago. When Shaunice made the choice to become natural, she chose to educate herself in what is good for her hair rather than depending solely on hair care professionals. “It was important for me to understand the hair that I was born with. I wanted to be responsible for my own curly hair success”, says Shaunice. After choosing to transition to fully natural hair, Shaunice took to the internet to research what her hair needed. From natural hair articles to watching videos created by other young natural hair gurus on YouTube, Shaunice found all the information she needed.

Shaunice’s natural hair practices include creating her own shampoos, deep conditioner treatments, and sometimes even hair gel. As a young African American woman with mixed textured hair, Shaunice found that the natural hair market did not provide products that were both helpful and affordable for her hair. “The natural community and industry are growing and improving every day, but it needs some work when it comes to creating products for mixed textured hair” says Shaunice. While looking for products for her 3c/4b hair texture, Shaunice found that she couldn’t find products on the market that could treat her hairs problem areas. The products she did use, such as the natural hair brand Cantu worked, but only for a short period of time. As her hair grew healthier, her hair regime called for raw ingredients. “Raw Black soap, Coconut Milk, and Aloe Vera saved my hair. I have not used anything else but raw ingredients in my hair for a while now”, says Shaunice.

Shaunice’s journey to understanding natural hair inspired her to help others with their transitioning experience. Not only is she giving information to other young people who need help with their hair, she is promoting self-education in the natural hair community. Much like other natural hair gurus, Shaunice is using social media to be a part of the natural hair conversation.
