NDMU Celebrates Student Leaders



Notre Dame of Maryland University is a catholic institution that serves a predominantly female population. Part of the Notre Dame experience allows students to apply for and join different student organizations and leadership groupswho help to create an inclusive and fearless community. On Sunday, May 6th, 2018 the Student Engagement and community programming division held a desert ceremony that celebrated all of the student leaders on campus a d their achievements. Students were able to earn awards for their organizations as well as their individual achievements. “This event lets our students know that we see them and appreciate everything that they do”, said Felica John, Student Life’s Program Life Assistant. A number of awards were given out, from program of the year to an award highlighting the most outstanding student in each class. The president of the university, Dr. MaryLou Yam, was also in attendance followed by a number of university staff and faculty.

Faculty and staff were recognized for their contributions to the university and its students. The Faculty/Staff Supporter of the Year award, given to Dr. Deb Calhoun, chair of NDMU’s Business Department, recognized faculty and staff who supported and encouraged students as a way to invoke growth and leadership development. The ceremony closed with a speech from graduating senior Zaria Corner resisting a powerful speech on “Being Fearless as a NDMU Student Leader”. The speech covered topics like what the it means to be a woman of NDMU and how current and future students can continue to serve their communities as fearless leaders.” I just want all of the student’s leaders at Notre Dame to walk with confidence in everything they do and live in their power”, said Zaria. Overall, the Lead on Student Leadership Recognition and Desert Reception brought members of the NDMU community together to celebrate all achievements and look onto what’s to come in the future.
