Identifying and Understanding Your Hair Texture

The world is filled with so many different men and with women with all different textures of natural hair. Often times people find themselves struggling to properly treat and grow their hair because they do not know what their hair texture type. Most people identify their hair textures in simple terms like, "kinky curly" or " loose curls". But natural hair textures can be identifiedby simply looking at a hair textures chart. Natural hair textures are identified by whether your hair is 1-4D.

A 1 hair texture represents straight hair. As the chart moves to 4D, each number represents the tightness/kinkiness of the curls. In order to create the proper hair care routine, it is extremely important that men and women understand their natural hair texture. Hair textures that may fall closer to the beginning of the chart do not call for the use of heavier hair products. Men and women who have straight to lose curly hair textures benefit more when using lighter hair products to keep the hairs natural volume and flow. Heavy hair products will only weigh the hair down and negatively affect the curls/waves in the hair. Hair textures that are closest to the bottom of the chart, call for a very different type of hair treatment. Tighter curl textures call for heavier hair products that can. absorb into the thicker hair shaft in order to protect and define the curls. Although the hair chart may identify the textures in eight different ways, some people may find that their hair is a mixture of multiple textures.

But,using the chart and doing some researchon specific hair types will still help to build a better understanding of an individual’s hair need

To aid in identifying hair textures, there are a number of stylist, hair gurus, and regular everyday curly girls and boys who create videos on the subject. Celebrity hair stylist Angela C Styles , has created a YouTube channel that is perfect for men and women who are trying to get back to the basics with their natural hair knowledge. In her video on natural hair types, she walks viewers through the process of identifying their hair textures/types. Angela builds the knowledge base of natural hair by starting with the foundation. By understanding the hair type, men and women will gain an understanding of what their hair needs. To make the process of identifying hair textures simple, natural men and women can use three easy steps. First, some research will have to be done. By looking at different hair texture charts, reading different articles or logged post about textures, and watching videos on the subject, natural men and women can gain enough information to move onto the next step. Next, it’s time to identify. Whether this is at home by yourself or with a hair care professional, the hair texture must be identified to create the proper hair regime. Last, a proper hair regime must be created. This may take some time, but it will about a lot easier to create after knowing the hair texture.
