Behind the Curls: Latina's with Natural Hair

Within the Hispanic community there is so much controversy within the topic of Latina women wearing the natural hair. Similar to the experience of many African American men and women, due to the influence of European beauty trends on Hispanic culture. a divide has been created, that makes it difficult for Hispanic men and women to embrace their natural hair texture. For Brenda Diazdelville, a young Latina of Dominican, El Salvadorian, and Honduran descent, wearing her hair naturally is her way of claiming her identityas a proud Latina. Brenda grew up with mixed emotions when it comes to her natural hair. From seeing her friends and family choose to wear their hair straight to trying to find her perfect hair routine for her 3A/3B hair texture.

Brenda explained in her culture, some Latina women find straight hair to be the more desirable / appropriate style. Although, Brenda’s curls have been complimented by family friends, she has also never been able to escape comments like “Your hair would look so pretty straight”. Brenda is now on her journey to finding complete comfort in her natural hair. After years of getting split opinions on how she should feel about her curls, Brenda has found her own voice in the conversation of natural hair for Latina’s. Like Brenda, there are so many Latina’s beginning to take part in the natural hair conversation. Hispanic men and women all over are finding that their natural hair experiences are very similar if not identical to the many African American men and women who are continuing to be a driving force on the natural hair movement. The natural hair movement reaches out to all men and women who thrive to embrace their natural curls. For Brenda this only the beginning of beautiful journey of self-discoverythrough the natural hair movement.
