Beauty Standards in Argentina

The conversation of beauty standards from an international view point is a complicated and diverse conversation. In the U.S. men and women are used to having discussions on the beauty industry that involve topics about the perfect weight, complexion, and overall personal style. These topics are similar in Argentina. Women in Argentina are faced with challenges as it pertains to becoming comfortable with their own beauty and embracing their own styles without being effected by what society tells them they should be. Valentina Dallasta, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina officially moved to the Unites States when she was a teenager. While living in Buenos Aires, Valentina was faced with so many different expectations for female beauty. From the way their hair is styled to their weight, Argentinian women are expected to be what Valentine describes as “the perfect package”. “Women are always supposed to look perfect. At home, women aren’t supposed to go anywhere without looking their best”, Valentina said. Valentina explained that at home, women are expected to be physically fit, wear their very best clothing, wear make-up every time they go out. “I do not identify with any of the beauty standards at home. Those standards make it very hard for women to be comfortable in their skin, it’s sad”. Most if not all of the beauty standards that Valentina resents back home can be found in the U.S. Although they are changing, women in the U.S. have also been faced with beauty standards that are not identifiable with every woman. To challenge these standards women in the U.S. and Argentina are standing their ground when it comes to embracing their natural features and personal styles. Women like Valentina are encouraging fellow women internationally to be the woman they want to be despite what society may tell them.
